Merasmus

Merasmus as seen in game

The earliest available records of Merasmus show him to be brewer of potions; an example being his "Wizard's Brew" Hat Tonic as advertised in the August 21, 1861, issue of The Teufort Bystander on display in the Coaltown Museum. He remained in Scotland until relocating to Badlands sometime between the late 1950s and mid-1960s.

In the Bombinomicon comic, when the Demoman was seven years old, he discovered Merasmus' castle in the Highlands while seeking work. Merasmus told the Demoman to sweep the library of his castle, but told him not to look at a certain book. Ultimately, the Demoman lost his left eye to the Bombonomicon, and Merasmus was forced to remove it lest the Bombonomicon would haunt the eye forever. Years later, the magician's tumultuous relationship with the Soldier was revealed, and he summoned MONOCULUS (the haunted eye) for the mercenaries to fight.

During the events of Soldier Needs a Home, Merasmus kicked the Soldier out of his castle for being a nuisance. When he found later that the Soldier trashed his home and evicted him, he took on a ghostly form and decided to attack the Soldier's team.

Later, Merasmus moved in with Tom Jones, who was murdered by Soldier. After calling the police, Miss Pauling tricked Merasmus into checking Tom Jones' pulse, and Merasmus was believed to be responsible for the murder and held for questioning.

Merasmus was later shown to be in prison, now with several tattoos (one of them the Soldier's class emblem) and a slightly different skull hat, where he relayed to the other inmates the tale of Grave Matters.

In the game itself, Merasmus acts as a boss fight during October

Attack Potency: City Block Level (Can damage the Mercenaries who can tank hits from the Cow Mangler, which can disintegrate cows)

Speed: At least Supersonic+, likely Massively Hypersonic (Can react to and even outspeed flying rockets and sniper bullets. Can easily keep up with Scout on BONK!)

Lifting Strength: Superhuman, Higher with Telekinesis

Striking Strength: City Block Level (Can damage the Mercenaries who can tank hits from the Cow Mangler, which can disintegrate cows)

Durability: City Block Level (Similar to, if not superior to the other mercenaries in terms of durability)

Stamina: High

Range: Extended Melee range to dozens, if not hundreds of meters with powers

Standard Equipment:

  • Staff: Can be used for blunt strikes. If overwhelmed, Merasmus will fire a beam at all surrounding opponents, which sets them on fire and flying skyward. Can summon single bombs to throw at enemies.
  • Bombinomicon: A book that Merasmus can use to spray bombs around himself. Merasmus rarely uses it, as he becomes vulnerable when the book casts bombs. Most likely stores Merasmus's spells. Whoever tries to read it, has their eyes cursed, as done with Demoman. Every time Merasmus teleports, turns the opponents' heads into bombs. To get rid of the bombs, the opponent needs to run into Merasmus, making them explode and stunning Merasmus, while sending the original victim skywards and briefly granting them Ubercharge, overheal and a few seconds of Critical Hits. If the victim doesn't get rid of the bomb quickly enough, it explodes and deals damage. It is sentient, sarcastic, and smug.
  • Wheel of Fate: A wheel that is normally spun whenever the control point is captured, but Merasmus can most likely spin in whenever. Normally benefit the RED and BLU teams as they fight, but should affect Merasmus as well when he's in combat. The possible outcomes are as follows:
    • Super Jump: Massively boosts jumping capabilities and prevents the affected people from taking fall damage.
    • Shrunken Head: Shrinks heads, increasing the affected people's vocal pitching.
    • Big Head: Makes heads larger, lowering the affected people's vocal pitching. One of Merasmus's favorite cards.
    • Superspeed: Increases running speed.
    • Zero Gravity: Lowers the gravity in the combat area.
    • ÜberCharge: Makes every player glow depending on what team they are, making them invulnerable. Merasmus clearly regrets having this option on the Wheel.
    • Critical Hits: Damage dealt is increased by 100%.
    • Dance Off: Teleports everybody on the map to the middle of it, forcing them to dance before regaining control.
    • Whammy: Has multiple possible outcomes.
      • Can set the victims on fire.
      • Can make the victims bleed for a short period of time.
      • Can rain Jarate on the victims.
      • Can spawn Ghosts, which stun whoever walks through them (or if the ghosts float through them instead).

Intelligence: Genius (can easily use magical spells)

Weaknesses: is rather foolish

Notable Attacks/Techniques:

  • When damageable, Merasmus's health is displayed as a bar on the screen, under the time.
  • When Merasmus spawns, he pushes all nearby opponents away and destroys all stickybombs around him, also knocking back all stickybombs he comes in contact with.
  • Merasmus has a wide variety of attacks, and can teleport throughout the map on random intervals. Merasmus can melee players with his staff, roll bombs at them, and perform a magic attack which sets selected targets on fire and launches them skyward. Merasmus can also hover over the control point and use the Bombinomicon to spread bombs a wide range around the control point. Whenever Merasmus is hovering in the air while performing this attack, all damage dealt to him will be critical hits. Merasmus uses this attack far less often than any of his other attacks.
  • Every time Merasmus teleports to another location on the map, the Bombinomicon will choose a few players and transform their heads into bombs. Players cannot attack after being turned into bombs and are stuck in their humiliation pose until the bomb detonates or they are killed, but their speed is also boosted. The screen and the Bombinomicon will instruct the player to find Merasmus and run into him. If the player reaches Merasmus with the bomb, it will stun him, stopping him in his tracks.
  • At all times while stunned, all damage Merasmus takes will be critical hits. The player who transported the bomb will become invulnerable, speed boosted, and crit boosted for a short time while getting tossed upward from the explosion. If the player fails to reach Merasmus in time, the bomb will detonate, damaging the player and surrounding members of the opposing team by 100 HP. If the player kills anyone, those show up on the killfeed and grant the player a point.
  • At around 50% and less than 10% health, the boss health bar will turn green as Merasmus teleports away and disguises himself as a random prop, while other props are scattered about the map to throw players off. While Merasmus is disguised, he will slowly heal himself.
  • Upon Merasmus' defeat, he will disappear and be replaced by the Bombinomicon. It will remain on the field for a few seconds, and all players can use it to teleport to Skull Island.
  • Summoning: Can summon other Halloween Bosses and monsters to serve him and assist in defeating the enemy.
    • MONOCULUS!: Originally, Demoman's left eyeball, now possessed by the Bombonomicon. It is enormous in size, easily as tall and wide as a person and then some. It can fly and teleport, leaving behind a purple vortex that sucks the enemies inside and transprots them to the Underworld, in which they rapidly take damage over time. However, the opponent can quickly escape by locating a portal. Fires purple eyeballs that act as rockets - if enraged, its eye color changes to red and it fires in bursts of three rockets at a time.
    • The Horseless Headless Horsemann: The undead Silas Mann, presumably the brother of Zepheniah Mann. By spreading his arms and shouting "Boo!" can put opponents in state of fear and force them to flee while being unable to fight back. Wields a massive axe that can one-shot any of the Mercs. Upon killing someone, some of his health is restored (and his maximum health pool increases) while also granting him a permanent speed boost.
    • Skeletons: Spawn in groups of five - 4 medium skeletons and the Skeleton King. When killed, medium skeletons spawn three small skeletons. The Skeleton King, on the other hand, spawns a Rare Magic Spell.
  • Magic Spells: Being a sorcerer, Merasmus is adept at utilizing all forms of magic. He can also make his soul leave his body if angered enough and, if his body is destroyed, seemingly restore it in an unspecified way.
    • Fireball: The phrase "Caputus Crepitus" is said as the spell is cast. Fires a fireball that flies in a straight line until hitting something, exploding and setting anyone in range on fire.
    • Teleport: The phrase "Iipsum Instantarium" is said as the spell is cast. Fires a dark, smoke-like bomb that teleports the caster wherever it lands. Slightly heals the caster on use.
    • Blast Jump: The phrase "Amplus Tripudio" is said as the spell is cast. Sends the user into the air. Slightly heals the caster on use.
    • Uber Heal: Heals and turns the user and nearly allies invincible. Also temporarily gives them twice their normal health, which depletes over time.
    • Ball O' Bats: The phrase "Deus Invictus" is said as the spell is cast. Shoots a glowing ball surrounded by bats that falls in an arc, sending anyone in the blast radius into the air and making them bleed.
    • Pumpkin MIRV: The phrase "Pactum Diabolus" is said as the spell is cast. Fires a bomb that spawns pumpkin bombs around the explosion area, which blow up after being shot by the caster.
    • Stealth: The phrase "Barpo Invisium" is said as the spell is cast. Turns the user invisible for 8 seconds and slightly heals him.
    • Summon MONOCULUS: The phrase "Invokum MONOCULUS" is said as the spell is cast. Summons a spectral Monoculus, who becomes an ally to the caster. Weaker than the Monoculus Merasmus himself spawns.
    • Summon Skeletons: The phrase "Mortis Animataris" is said as the spell is cast. Fires a skull, which spawns three medium skeletons that become allies to the caster. The skeletons automatically die after 30 seconds.
    • Ball O' Lightning: The phrase "Imputum Fulumenus" is said as the spell is cast. Fires a ball of electricity, which sucks enemies closer and damages them with electric blasts.
    • Meteor Storm: The phrase "Seismela Tremoro" is said as the spell is cast. Launches a fireball that summons meteors falling from the sky around the area.
    • Minify: The phrase "Paidum Celeris" is said as the spell is cast. Shrinks the user to the size of a mouse. The caster gains movement speed and jumping capability boosts. Wears off after some time.
