Summary[]

Finn Mertens is the main protagonist of the first part of the series Chainsaw Time. He is a teenage devil hunter with the exceptional ability to transform into a devil himself.

After the death of his Father, Finn found himself the sole inheritor of the debts they owed to the Yakuza. Left on his own after being given the choice of either paying off the debt or being killed by the Yakuza, Finn would soon run into an injured devil. This was the Chainsaw Devil, Jake. Realizing each other's predicament, Finn formed a contract with Jake: in exchange for some of his blood, the devil would aid in his quest to slay devils to make money. Finn and Jake eventually formed a close friendship while Finn used Jake to work as a devil hunter for the local Yakuza.

However, this would only last for so long, as the Yakuza eventually betrayed Finn, dismembering him and Jake and throwing their remains in a dumpster as a sacrifice to the Zombie Devil. Jake then formed a new contract with Finn: in exchange for Jake becoming his heart, Finn was to continue chasing the dreams he told to Jake during their time together. Fusing with Jake and gaining his devil powers, Finn is reborn as the titular Chainsaw Man, a Devil-human hybrid, and easily slays his betrayers. In order to honor Jake's last wish, Finn becomes a Public Safety Devil Hunter after meeting Princess Bubblegum, a high-ranking Public Safety member who offers Finn the position due to her interest in his abilities.

This also seems to bring him back into peak shape but is entirely dependent on how much blood he has in his body)

  • Mind Manipulation and Perception Manipulation (Was able to push though the Darkness Devil's mind manipulation and perception altering powers. Through sheer willpower, he managed to resist Goliad's mind control, who should be comparable to the previous host of the Control Devil)

Could go blow for blow with the Ice Devil hosts on several occasions); Large Mountain level with Jake (Was able to beat the Rock Devil and cut though his meteorite, which was this strong)

Large Mountain level (After his merge with Pochita, Finn's strength greatly increased, being able to knock down Mashal Lee, a half demon, with a kick to his balls before briefly trading blows with him, albeit Aki had been caught off guard by the initial attack, and with the use of an sword Finn was able to casually dispatch multiple devils), higher with Scarlet and Root Sword; Varies (With the devil embodying the fear of chainsaws within him, the more feared he is, the more powerful he becomes, even a relatively minor boost in fear can immensely boost a devil's overall strength and effects of their abilities), higher (Portrayed to be stronger when transformed; being able to bust through a infrastructure that Marceline had trouble breaking. Able to easily tear through devils such as the Zombie, Bat, Eel and Eternity Devil as well as be able contend with Katana Man with his chainsaws, the latter two shown capable of directly harming Finn's durability. Even when greatly weakened from blood loss to where he couldn't fully transform, could still physically block attacks from and harm devils like the Leech Devil with his punches) when transformed

Large Mountain level (After grueling daily training with Simmon, says that he's stronger than before and can take down much more devils easier. At Least Large Planet level (Known as the devil that devils fear the most. After reawakening within Finn, easily one-shot the Nightosphere Devil, Princess Bubblegum, all the other hybrids in Special Division 5 and a varity of different higher end Devils contracted. In the latter fight, a single kick launched Betty and Sveinn through multiple skyscrapers, killing them both. Princess Bubblegum considered a proper fight with the Chainsaw Devil "unwinnable" and needed to resort to heavily depowering him in spite of her previous victory over the 20% Gun Devil with minimal preparation)

Stamina: Superhuman (Even before becoming a Devil-Human Hybrid, Finn has been continuously hunting devils and doing other odd jobs while malnourished to the point of having trouble sleeping from the hunger every single day. Even after being stabbed through the heart, could still run away for a brief while. Could continue to fight despite having all of the bones in his body broken. This phenomenal ability to endure has only been further shown after his revival. Extreme injuries such as disembowelment, broken bones, amputation, being set ablaze, being dissolved by acid, bisection and even decapitation have shown to not be enough to stop his determination to keep on fighting; likely thanks to his resolute will and masochist tendencies revealed later on. Also, thanks to his physiology, Finn can theoretically fight indefinitely as long as there's blood around. This can be seen with his battle with the Eternity Devil, where he battled the devil non-stop for three days straight)

Range: Standard Melee Range, Extended Melee Range with swords and chainsaws, Up to Tens of Meters with Chains (Can use the chains from his chainsaws to wrap around his opponents from afar)

Standard Equipment:

Weapons
"Scarlet", also known as The Golden Blade of Battle is Finn's original and arguably most iconic weapon. It is a chainsaw which is noticeably worn and chipped, with several scratch marks. It eventual breaks in the fight agienst Katana Man and his goons.

The Root Sword is a transitionary sword used during Finn's training with Simmon. It's whereabouts are unknown after said arc as Finn began to use other Weapons instead.

The Demon Blood Blade is a chainsaw gifted to him by Marceline post their training with Simmon. It is a very large and imposing broad sword made with the blood of a variety of Demons and Devils Marcy had killed. Finn uses the sword in his rematch with Katana Man with it eventually being broken with his fight with the Doll Devil.

The Grass Blade is a weapon created through Finn's contract with the Grass Devil. Unlike his other weapons the Grass Blade can take a variety of shapes with it both taking the form of a Sword and a Chainsaw on different occasions, though usually staying as a blade of grass on Finn's arm. Finn would continue to use this blade till it eventually became self aware and created the entity known as Fern.

The Night sword is a sword gifted to him by Princess Bubblegum to help with his devil hunting activates after the loss of his Grass Blade. It was created though the collaboration of Peppermint Butler, Hunson, Princess Bubblegum and a varity of different other worldly lifeforms

Marceline's Last Gift is a weapon created from Marceline's blood gifted to him prior to her death by the hands of Princess Bubblegum. It is used to eventually defeat Princess Bubblegum as it was able to temporarily disable a great deal of her abilities

Intelligence:

At least Average. Due to his impoverished upbringing and incessant life as a devil hunter, Finn has been severely debilitated with his formal education - having never gone to a school before; showing trouble understanding basic kanji and the meanings of principal terms during the beginning of Part 1, although this inadvertently has lead to him being able to stay calm in most high-pressure situations. However, it's best to describe Finn as simply untaught rather than actually dumb. He has been shown to already be able to quickly perform long addition in his head at the very start of the series and since then has cognitively progressed by a good amount thanks to being placed under Marshal Lee's care, training with Simmon, watching educational television every single day and going to a proper high-school by the end of Part 1. Notably, Finn has shown to possess an incredible attention to detail, e.g. being able to quickly catch onto Marceline's contradiction of speech when she attempted to lure him into a trap, and recall information even in situations where it seems that he isn't paying any attention at all. Through his perceptiveness, he's able to turn the information he's noticed into strategic or tactical plans when needed. Moreover, Finn has also shown to be able to master various activities in a relatively short amount of time, this can be seen with him learning how to swim after just one short lesson with Flame Princess and being able to produce a wide-range of appetizing culinary dishes after just a few months. His experience living out in the streets has also greatly helped him practically in situations such as making money, e.g. recycling cigarette butts in order to make money from the homeless and exploiting the Eternity Devil's loop to collect duplicating student hats in order to sell them later.

Gifted. Even before his proper training, Finn has shown to be an extremely practical fighter thanks to being in the devil-hunting business ever since he was still a child. He's perfectly willing to aim for the weak points of an opponent's body right at the start of a fight and exploit those injured areas. Finn's ability in combat has since greatly improved thanks to his special training with the likes of Simon, a veteran devil hunter who's skilled enough to briefly keep up with Betty, another hunter that's skilled enough to be regarded to be able to win against anyone else in the world in a pure bare-knuckle fighting. Through his training, Finn has learnt and later practically applied lessons such as: to always keep a cool head while in battle, be perspective if the environment around him can be exploited against an opponent and to never trust what a "hunter" says. Through Finn may appear naive and dense sometimes, his quick-thinking and outright luscious ingenuity in battle has let him overcome insurmountable situations (examples shown below in 'Feats - Intelligence'). Moreover, he's also able to formulate complex plans that utilises the knowledge he's gained about his opponent with resources he has access to when push comes to shove, as seen in the final battle of the Public Safety Arc, where he managed to take Princess Bubblegum by surprise and successfully outsmart her.

Weaknesses: Possesses all general weaknesses possessed by Hybrids. As abilities such as his innate regeneration and transformation are linked to the amount of blood he has in his body, if he's running low on blood, he will be unable to regenerate or maintain his transformation. This isn't helped by the fact that just his transformation will cause him lose a lot of blood due to cutting himself with his chainsaws to the point where he'll get incredibly faint and can even pass out after a long battle when reverted back to human form. Likewise, his trigger-based regeneration requires him to pull on the cord on his chest in order for it to work. Finn has serious thalassophobia, or fear of the ocean. Has very little control, or even awareness over his powers or true nature. Is easily manipulated though the prospect of money or sexual favours from women he finds pretty even if they're actively trying to kill him or he himself knows that it's a honey trap. Furthermore, will actively attempt to save pretty women or animals when they're in danger. He's also prone to swallow anything with nutritional value that enters his mouth.

Notable Attacks/Techniques:

  • Hybrid Transformation: Through pulling the chainsaw cord that's on his chest, Finn can transform into his Hybrid-Devil form; gaining a plethora of new abilities and also healing/resurrecting him from any wound previously inflicted on him.
  • Starter Cord Pulling: Beyond just for transformation, Finn can also pull his starter cord to reprocess the blood already in himself to get back into peak condition even after death, as well as rev his chainsaws even faster than before.
  • Chainsaw Creation: True to his namesake, Finn is able to manifest chainsaws out of his head, arms, and later even his legs & feet which he can use to stick onto walls. Aside from the one of his head, these chainsaws can also be retracted at will.
  • Chain Manipulation: By disconnecting the chains off his chainsaws or turning parts of his body tissue into chainsaw chains, Finn can use them like horse reins or wrap around his opponent to pull them closer to himself, which he can follow up with a slicing kick.
